The CD1440 (I think that's the part number) chip in the smart cards like Stallion and Cyclades do do automatic CTS/RTS handshaking with the modem. They also have very large FIFOs. Which means you can run 256 (yes two fifty six) ports at 57600 in a 486 DX4/100 ;-) For those that are interested, 4 Stallion 64 port ISA cards.
