after exploring this a bit, it looks like the breakage is 
something to do with recode: I couldn't get it to install properly 
  and it's annoying to have configure insist on a version of 3.5 
when you just installed 3.6.

and I don't even need this thing: I was just trying to see what 
was wroing with it.
