I'll write again if I learn anything. "dial" also freezes. There are differences, however. init has been started, the console is echoing and ^T has been bound to status when the works get gummed up. According to status, init is running flat-out, but nothing happens. ^C and ^\ echo, and do nothing. I should mention that I am booting off of an IDE Disk-On-Chip module rather than a floppy. (It acts like a standard IDE device, but it's a 15 meg flash.) This breaks the stock persistance machinery which expects to find a filesystem on /dev/fd0, but it hasn't presented any other problems in the past. Thanks for any hints anyone can offer! Mike.
