A couple of things did you try using the 'mediaopt full-duplex' in your /etc/rc.conf? (i.e. ifconfig_xl0="inet nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn netmask nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn mediaopt full-duplex") The other thing is to check that the hub or switch you're connecting to supports full duplex.
