OK, good question. I misunderstood your commit message and thought
that anyone who had installed emulators/linux_base-* would also have
enabled linux compatability; so that print/acroread/Makefile was
missing something along the lines of USE_LINUX=3Dyes. Having read the
diffs, it appears there's not much more you can do.

emulators/linux_base-8 does have a pkg-install script that loads the
linux kernel compatability layer. I don't know if this is appropriate
to copy.
