Installing net/samba41 creates by the ports installing framework the essential
directory /var/db/samba4/private which contains the essential file secrets.tdb.

After a successful installation and running a samba 4.1.17 system, deletion of
/var/db/samba4 occured during a failure.

trying to create private/secrets.tdb via

smbpasswd -a -W

or

pdbedit -L administrator

in an LDAP backed environment fails compalining about a non existent
private/secrets.tdb due to a missing directory /var/db/private.

/var/db/private should be created by the etc/rc.d/ script if not existent
avoiding this problem.
