FYI: Though there is no description in the documents of the sendmail,
recent sendmail has SASLv2 support in it. You can try it by putting
following variables into your /etc/make.conf then rebuilding sendmail:
SENDMAIL_CFLAGS=-I/usr/local/include -DSASL=2
SENDMAIL_LDFLAGS=-L/usr/local/lib
SENDMAIL_LDADD=-lsasl2
