I had read that but hadn't been successful in a short fit of trying to 
make it work.  Your e-mail inspired me to try again, this time 
successfully.  My previous problem was that the vidcontrol man page didn't 
communicate to me that the argument to "-s" is the function key number you 
want, not the device number.  The man page also didn't say anything about 
redirecting standard input, and your use of /dev/ttyv0 didn't make sense 
to me (why the same device both times?).

Thanks to your inspiration and a little mailing list research,

	vidcontrol -s 1 < /dev/console

before hibernation and

	vidcontrol -s 12 < /dev/console

afterward has eliminated the need to unfreeze XFree86 manually.
