 My fileserver (4 x 1.5TB in raidz1) has only 1GB and it runs fine. It
 boots a UFS root though.

 The difference to my loader.conf:

 vfs.zfs.arc_max="256M"
 vfs.zfs.prefetch_disable="1"
 vfs.zfs.zio.use_uma="0"
 vm.kmem_size="512M"
 vm.kmem_size_max="512M"
