Well.. I would propose to go as far as dropping floppy install completely for Alpha. Rationale: all Alphas have been supplied from day 1 with CD drives. DEC in it's days decided that CDs were the install medium of the future, and given the size of Alpha binaries the only sensible choice. Given that Alphas come either with builtin SCSI or (on newer models) IDE-CD boot support there is not really a valid reason to keep fighting the size of the install floppy. A US$ 5 surplus SCSI CD drive from a garagesale will get you running, so cost is also not really a valid reason not to either.
