The upgrade function is the way to go.  If you upgrade to 2.2.x then a
straight kernel rebuild will break ps, top, and many other system utils.

Fetch /pub/FreeBSD/xxx-RELEASE/src/ssys.* then run 'tar xzf ssys.*' from
/usr/src.
