Lutz -

Thanks so much, this did the trick.  Have been banging my head against a
wall for a day trying to get this to work, what a relief.  The screen
refresh is not as snappy as I would like, but I can probably tweak this some
more (and my monitor / vid card are not that great).  At least it is
manageable now.

Now I can get on with the real business of having fun with gnustep and
window maker!
