Yes. I just recently installed 3.1 in a 486/33 w/8MB RAM. I had a lot of trouble installing it (PPP over null modem to my much bigger 3.1 box). I could get it to begin unpacking the distributions, but about 19% of the way through bin, it would stop. I could still switch consoles, etc., but no errors on the debug console. Installing over Ethernet might have helped, since no resources would have had to be allocated to ppp. I finally ended up making a custom boot disk with a stripped down kernel, which freed up just over another 1MB of RAM, and all went well.
