Last minute breakage - I think I have it now!  It should be
working in a set I'm having Gary test right as we speak.

That's because they're setting variables, not bitmasks.  I don't
have check functions written to verify that variables match the
values in the menus.  Hmmm..  I will try to do this.

Argh!  I forgot about this "feature" of vsystem() :-)
