have you switched to linux compat (i.e. run /usr/compat/linux/bin/bash) & tried to install from there. i won't really make a difference but i find the error messages are clearer. if you've downloaded the rpm then it's is installed by default. i don't know about the tarball package i think it's a gnu script & compression util. if so you'll need to install that rpm from a redhat dist. bsd has native versions of the jdk availble in ports. i don't think there is a stable Java 2 yet (1.1.8 being the latest).
