This is probably legalease around feature they included for the sake of remaining competitive with other platforms that do the same thing (example: .NET). I can't see Sun knowingly releasing updates that violate the current API, but I could see them using it for security updates. Sun mainly targets Microsoft as a competitor, thereby probably trying to institute an auto-update system to compete with the one that ships with Windows XP (thus .NET). But I agree that pressure should be applied to get Sun to at least make these updates opt-in. I'm curious if this auto-updating mechanism is present in the source.
