I just had a heck of a time installing apache + mysql + php3 with FBSD 3.2. The port wanted gd, but the version of gd fetched didn't match what the port expected, the checksum validation failed, and the patches wouldn't apply. The same was true with PHP3. Since I'm a newbie to UNIX, I gave up on the ports collection, went to the respective web sites, and followed each packages INSTALL instructions. I'm an experienced computer professional. There was recently some banter of noticing less newbie questions. It's answers like this that keep me from even asking questions.
