Can you reproduce with xf86-video-intel instead of "modesetting"? For performance parity enable SNA and DRI3 like described in intel(4x) manpage. Can you reproduce with KDE, XFCE or non-DE like ctwm? Start with a known good version, famila= rize with building outside of ports, apply patches from old versions of mesa-dri= or mesa-devel then go git-bisect(1) route.
