At the time I had side by side comparison machines that were a mix of worki= ng well vs. overheating. My conclusion was that the cooling systems were in a failure mode for those overheating --since other matching machines were doi= ng fine. As I remember Mac OS X had fancier handling of the issue that prevented crashing by forcing idle time in addition to fan-speed control but the resu= lt was a large difference in performance for "works well" vs. "overheating" for the same load. At the time some FreeBSD changes were made by Justin Hibbits that did impro= ve things some for the problem machines. But the overheating machines were pre= tty far gone and I gave up on them.
