Pity! This is crazy. I'm typing in an xterm right now running under Window Maker 0.51 which is running 3.1-STABLE that started it's life as a 2.1.7 machine. I'm still convinced you have an a.out/ELF library problem. Have you tried pkg_delete'ing all of the libs (xpm etc) and remade them so that they are ELF and then tried Window Maker. As I recall you had a mix of a.out and ELF libs.
