It depends on what one calls a convincing argument.  Whenever I speak up on
something, I've been relentlessly giving in-depth rationale behind what I
am proposing, or having concern with (yes, that goes as far as muting of
mkdir's -- and as a matter of fact, I've always been saying something like
muting them is fine unless you want them vocal -- which IMHO clearly shows
that I'm not trying to enforce anything which goes below a reasonable style
bar).

The main problem with 3rd part is that most people don't care as long as
their ports build and package, and this attitude spans Makefile and commit
logs contents.  That said, I have nothing against the convention, as long
as it, uhm, makes sense. :)
