pico is installed as part of the "pine" mailer, install pine (which is
probably in the ports collection (/usr/ports)) and you will have it (I
still have not started using ports too much)

in the meantime, I would suggest learning how to use vi if you are going
to be using UNIX-type OSes extensively. 8 commands to learn will make it
very easy to edit almost any file on any UNIX machine.
