That may be the problem:

  $ xrandr --version
  Server reports RandR version 1.1

I have one such line:

  (II) RADEON: Driver for ATI Radeon chipsets: ATI Radeon QD (AGP),

followed by about a hundred more listing additional ATI chipsets
(but no more with the "(II) RADEON" prefix).
