His short response is "fixing it is hard" and he recommends not using softupdates on filesystems that don't have about a minutes worth of free space (ie root). (In any case, softupdates enhance _write_ performance only. The root partition should be very close to read-only, so there's no gain. If you want faster upgrades, you can mount root async whilst you're doing the update).
