This has been raised with Kirk by several different people (including
myself).  His short response is "fixing it is hard" and he recommends
not using softupdates on filesystems that don't have about a minutes
worth of free space (ie root).

(In any case, softupdates enhance _write_ performance only.  The root
partition should be very close to read-only, so there's no gain.  If
you want faster upgrades, you can mount root async whilst you're doing
the update).
