It lets me type in my username and password, then hangs for 20
seconds, then beats on the disk for 60 seconds -- writing core? --
then it gives me the message.

No complaints at startup -- that I could see -- about adding
swap. I've got 48MB swap with 24MB RAM.

I was able to boot single-user, then fsck'd /, /var, and /usr, then
mounted them OK. I then did swapon and that worked fine, too.
