Very clearly, there appears to be no DHCP server on the other end. If you have an *ADSL* modem (instead of the phone or ISDN variety), it is quite likely that your ISP requires you to use PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE). The handbook has a section explaining how to configure your system to connect via this method. http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/pppoe.html If you can show us your ISPs instructions for configuring a Windows or Mac system, I'm certain we can help convert those for FreeBSD.
