I was just joking, of course, but it's actually not an 8-bit long; it's got a Motorol 68328 "dragon ball" chip in there which is a full 16 bit device with no MMU. The lack of an MMU and only a MB of memory to work with is the biggest stumbling block, though from what I hear Linux is being ported to it nonetheless.
