sym(4), although I can't imagine this making a difference.

There seems to be some variation in the symptoms:

naddy@kemoauc[~] dump 0af /dev/null /holding
DUMP: Date of this level 0 dump: Tue Mar 6 17:05:02 2001
DUMP: Date of last level 0 dump: the epoch
  DUMP: Dumping /dev/da1e (/holding) to /dev/null
DUMP: mapping (Pass I) [regular files]
  DUMP: mapping (Pass II) [directories]
  DUMP: estimated 3831 tape blocks.
DUMP: slave couldn't reopen disk: Interrupted system call
DUMP: The ENTIRE dump is aborted.

(Or maybe this is entirely unrelated.)
