I'm using FreeBSD 2.2.8 and have an HP540 printer. There is a patch/driver for HP500 series printers at <a href='ftp://ftp.pdb.sni.de/pub/utilities/misc/hpdj.html'>HPDJ</a>. According to the author, he is going to change the name in the next release to "pcl3". I have had good luck with it on my printer. The margins are more or less correct and I don't lose data off the top of the page like the standard drivers.
