The problem is with the nVidia chipset on the HP and Compaq laptops that use it. For reasons that would take too much time to explain, all the work is being done and discussed in the freebsd-amd64 mailing list. You ought to try looking through the archives in that mailing list and if you feel adventurous, try implementing some of the patches right now. I suspect that FreeBSD will install smoothly on that architecture in the near future. The guys hacking out the patches have very little good to say about these computers but they are nevertheless giving it a lot of attention. I'm happy about that since my patience caused me to run out of time to return mine to HP.
