Um, you were using PPP, correct?   And you are seeing missing lines, 
dropped characters, etc?

You won't get this from broken flow control, unless you are using a
UDP-based communications tool.

If you are using user-mode PPP, "HDLC" errors are the giveaway for flow
control problems.
