I have just found that the mfsBSD "SE" version boots on my real hardware so it does, in fact, seem like a driver problem. I am going to investigate the differences in the drivers for the mfsBSD "SE" and mfsBSD "mini" versions to see what is different as they are both building from the same FreeBSD RELEASE 12.1 disc1.
