If you don't use any RPC services (NFS springs into mind though I'm
still not sure about the connection of the two) then you can safely
deactivate it in /etc/rc.conf. All systems, on which we deactivated
it, work without any problems. If you get hit by scans often, you
might also consider (if you didn't already) to install either ipfw or
ipf with some restrictive ruleset
