Running FreeBSD 9.2-STABLE on i386. As I also just stumbled acrros it, I looked into the outstanding problem reports, and ports/182723 contains the answer, or at least a work around. In short make build CC=clang CXX=clang++ CPP=clang-cpp does the trick.
