Indeed I read the EAG, but didn't think that the performance penalty was so huge. Mabe this should be more emphasized? I'll try 4.7, as per all your suggestions, but the only remaining problem is how to deal with my huge (~100g) ext3 HD. I probably have around 26g on that disk, so, on a last resort I could split it in half, move everything from ext3 to a UFS partition, but that would be really a last resort.
