You either get 4.8-RELEASE, with the RELENG_4_8 tag, and you pick up the security updates associated with this release; or you get -STABLE (with the RELENG_4 tag), which is FreeBSD-4 still evolving -- mostly bug fixes, security updates, backports from -CURRENT for new device drivers. Once in a while, -STABLE is frozen to a -RELEASE, the latest one being 4.10. Then, -STABLE development goes on. olive
