I realize this is a discussion forum for BSDI/FreeBSD SCSI, but I am
hoping someone can help me with a SCSI problem. Feel free to use
private e-mail to reply.

Bought a C2490A SCSI 2.1G drive on eBay (listed as "From IBM described
as used and tested"). It was originally used in a Compaq system and has
their numbers (and spare to use label) on it as well. It was made by
HP. It is in great condition with no shipping damage of any kind. Just
does not spin up, green LED comes on, does not ID itself to the
controller at boot.

Another gentleman in Wisconsin bought another of the same identical
drives from the same auction and has the same results.

Question: Did Compaq do something in the OEMing of these from HP that
makes them unusable with standard SCSI controllers and non Compaq
hardware? I have written to the guy who sold it as it appears DOA (as
was the opinion of the HP tech who indicated I did not need to have more
than 12v and 5v drive power connected and it should spinup ok), so far
no reply. If I do not receive one, I will deduct it and have a
chargeback issued when VISA comes due.

Seriously guys, is there something "special" about these drives that
would cause two strangers in different parts of the US to have the same
outcome?

I see them listed frequently, am I the rule or exception? Do they all
fail to work on a 1542B on a standard 486 Linux system?

Thanks for reading,

Steven
