For some reason (sorry I didn't record the error messages) I got into some weird menu loop in sysinstall when I tried to upgrade. So in the end, I just mounted the installation disk, found a directory RELEASE-6.2/base in which there was an install.sh that looked like it would do the right thing. It did the right thing. The only problem was that I forgot to restore my old /etc/passwd before rebooting. As a consequence I couldn't ssh in, and so I had to lug an old monitor across the room and clear desk space for it, so that I could log on to the console.
