Well, there are some ports that break PREFIX-clean rules and install directly in /var.. but it is possible to install to ${PREFIX}/var too. I'm not sure how most people would react to this, but I've always thought we should have ${PREFIX}/var pointing to /var/local or something like that, so we can keep PREFIX-cleanness without messing up the filesystem too much.
