Since the sums agree between the stage directory and /boot/msdos it appears that hope was mistaken. Speaking of the MAC fiasco, is USB subject to similar conflicts? The Pi3 giving me trouble with u-boot is one of the two with the MAC conflict. That might be consistent with the successful disk/enclosure swap. Thanks for all your help! bob prohaska
