I'm not familiar with the particular printer you mentioned in the subject:, but what I've done is get a printer that can be made to understand PostScript, and everything's been fine -- most tools in UNIX environments create plain text, and those that don't can generally be persuaded to create PostScript (possibly via an intermediate filter).
