You can put the line:

  options         SCSI_NCR_DFLT_SYNC=10

to your kernel config file and re-configure and re-make your
kernel.  Following is excerpt from dmesg:

ncr0: <ncr 53c895 fast40 wide scsi> rev 0x01 int a irq 16 on pci0.18.0
