I definitely helps to see what's going on.

VLC is a bit strange. You need to manually select OSS, and then enter
/dev/dsp.xxx in the preferences . Then you need save that, and restart VLC.
Then it will use that audio device!

I'm open to making virtual_oss more user-friendly, and your feedback and
first-time experiences are valuable.
