That wasn't really the question.  The question is why it doesn't work
in this case, even though the controller has been found.

I hardly doubt.  Remember, the BIOS _finds_ the disk, it's FreeBSD
that fails.  And FreeBSD doesn't use the BIOS once the kernel has been
loaded.
