Subject: Warning: Using existing root partition

What does it mean when I'm doing an install and I encounter
the following message:

Warning: Using existing root partition. It will be
assumed that you have the appropriate device entries
    already in /dev.

I'm trying to do a virgin install. I'm clueless as to why
it would want to use the existing root partition.

Thanks for any input.
