Each commit has a change number that is depot-wide, thus you always have a
current change number you can check out to.  It also means that a commit that
touches 10 files is one logical change so you can merge an entire chagne in one
sweep rather than having to hunt for all teh files affected like we do now.  It
also means it's easy to get a diff of an entire commit.  The p4 client still
needs some work to be truly useful, but that is a better long term goal.
