Why? "plain FreeBSD"'s APM and PC-Card support is limitted and buggy. You should be use PAO. By the way, I think 3COM 3CCFEM556BI is multi function card. PAO and plain FreeBSD can't correct handle multi function card. NetBSD's PC-Crad support code, it can use 3Com 3CXEM556 for ethernet card.
