If you were trying to install FreeBSD-4.0, yes, there are some known problems with the Qlogic driver which can cause the disks to not be seen sometimes- although your linux messages indicate that this was with a SYM board. If it was with the Qlogic board, Try a newer snapshot or wait for 4.1 (out in a few weeks). If something else, we need more information, thanks.
