Greetings, :) I have been away from FreeBSD development for a while, mostly focusing on the demands of my new job. I'm getting ready to dive back in (albeit in a more limited way) for a couple of reasons, mostly related to work and some projects going on there. So, I need some answers to the following questions, where "answers" I'm aware are going to be part fact, part opinions. I tried checking the web page for some of this stuff, but I can't reach it right now. 1. As far as I can see, 3.1-Stable is the way to go. I need info on the best way to upgrade a 2.2.8 system to 3.1-Stable, going fully(?) elf in the process. 2. What new parts of 3.1 are safe to use, and what aren't? I'm specifically interested in soft updates since one of the work projects requires a system that will have heavy disk access, where speed is going to be a primary deciding factor in which platform is chosen. 3. Is 3.1 fully elf, including boot blocks, kernel, etc? 4. I definitely need fast, reliable NFS if I'm going to sell the people at work on using freebsd, so how is that working in 3.1, or am I better off going to 4.x? I will be interfacing primarily with sun's. I have seen a flurry of nfs-related mail in the last few days, trying to catch up on that now. 4. I used to use KDE for my day-to-day workstation, is that still the best choice for a reliable, no-frills X workstation environment? There is a lot of CDE in use at work, so if I could blend in as much as possible it would help ease my task of selling them on my using freebsd on my desktop. Also, CDE has some nice stuff. :) 5. Anything else I need to know? I was involved in day to day work on freebsd from 2.2 through 2.2.7, but haven't been following things closely for about 6 months now. As always, thanks for the help, and I look forward to getting back into things.
