It would appear that what you have done is all that's required. As a
relative novice all I can tell you is that if you want to play CD's or
mp3's, all you need do now is just grab a player such as xmms & set the
preferences within that. xmms then calls upon several plugins to handle
input/output of various sources.

I also installed a small mixer called aumix which, along with xmms, can
be installed from /usr/ports/audio
